The course will introduce students to mass timber which is newly emerging as a building material in the United States after seeing decades of use overseas. The State of California approved mass timber for use through amendments to the California Building Code in the last months of 2020 and already buildings featuring this material are going up in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Its potential benefits for engineering, economics, and environmental conservation may make mass timber the defining building material of the next few decades.

This is the first in a series of courses focused on exploring this material from a special inspection standpoint. Future courses will focus on its engineering properties, component systems, and special inspection requirements.

After completing this course participants will be able to…

  • Describe mass timber and explain its history as a building material.
  • Explain the basic strengths and weaknesses of this material and its desirability to designers, developers, and conservationists.
