Note – This is a repeat course, back by popular request for those who missed it the last time. The ICC only allows a given class to be submitted for CEUs once in any three year period.

This course will introduce students to mass timber which is newly emerging as a building material in the United States after seeing decades of use overseas. The State of California approved mass timber for use through amendments to the California Building Code in the last months of 2020 and already buildings featuring this material are going up in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Its potential benefits for engineering, economics, and environmental conservation may make mass timber the defining building material of the next few decades.

This course will build on the previous entry in this series by introducing students to the requirements of Type IV-A, IV-B, and IV-C construction, their impact on the limits of a structure’s height and area, and the specific requirements of the materials used.

After completing this course participants will be able to…

  • Describe the requirements of for Type IV-A, IV-B, and IV-C construction.
  • Judge the maximum height or area of a structure based on its component systems.
  • Determine the suitability of a material for use in a given mass timber structure.

This course is 4 classroom hours worth 0.4 ICC continuing education units.

This seminar will be held online using Zoom with students able to participate in the class from the comfort of their own homes. Each participant will need a free Zoom account registered in their own name, a microphone, and a webcam in order to receive credit for attending this class. A properly configured tablet or smartphone may be used in lieu of the microphone or webcam, please contact program staff for guidance.

Invitations for the Zoom event will be sent to the email addresses associated with your teapprenticeship.org accounts after registration closes.

On the day of the course the Zoom meeting room will be open by 7:15 AM and students will be expected to be logged on no later than 7:45 AM. Late attendees will be unable to join the event.

The seminar will begin at 8:00 AM. Students will be expected to remain on camera at all times that the class is in session and to participate where called upon to do so. Students judged to be absentee by program staff may be removed without credit.
