Note – This is a repeat course, back by popular request for those who missed it the last time. The ICC only allows a given class to be submitted for CEUs once in any three year period.

This course will introduce students to mass timber which is newly emerging as a building material in the United States after seeing decades of use overseas. The State of California approved mass timber for use through amendments to the California Building Code in the last months of 2020 and already buildings featuring this material are going up in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Its potential benefits for engineering, economics, and environmental conservation may make mass timber the defining building material of the next few decades.

This course will build on the previous entries in this series by introducing students to the fire requirements for mass timber construction and the way these requirements can be met using mass timber materials in combination with noncombustible coverings.

After completing this course participants will be able to…

  • Determine the fire resistance requirements for any component of a mass timber structure.
  • Describe the fire resistance contributions of mass timber materials and noncombustible coverings.
  • Judge the appropriateness of a given combination of mass timber and noncombustible materials to meeting the fire protection requirements of any given component of a mass timber structure.

This course is 4 classroom hours worth 0.4 ICC continuing education units.

This seminar will be held online using Zoom with students able to participate in the class from the comfort of their own homes. Each participant will need a free Zoom account registered in their own name, a microphone, and a webcam in order to receive credit for attending this class. A properly configured tablet or smartphone may be used in lieu of the microphone or webcam, please contact program staff for guidance.

Invitations for the Zoom event will be sent to the email addresses associated with your accounts after registration closes.

On the day of the course the Zoom meeting room will be open by 12:15 PM and students will be expected to be logged on no later than 12:45 PM. Late attendees will be unable to join the event.

The seminar will begin at 1:00 PM. Students will be expected to remain on camera at all times that the class is in session and to participate where called upon to do so. Students judged to be absentee by program staff may be removed without credit.
